Trump appeared ready to walk out as Acosta clung to the microphone and persisted with questions about the president's views on a caravan of Central American migrants making its way to the United States border.

"When you report fake news, you are the enemy of the people", he told CNN's Jim Acosta when the reporter took issue with the president's characterization of the migrant caravan.

"That's enough. Put down the mic", he ordered Acosta, after a White House aide tried to take the microphone from him, only for Acosta to initially refuse to turn it over and push her arm down. "Sorry about that Mia", Mr Trump said.

"The way you treat Sarah Huckabee is awful", he said.

Earlier, President Trump warned House Democrats about spending the remaining years of his presidency investigating him and the administration.

"Mia Love gave me no love", the president said.

He said that he thought it was probably better that Republicans haven't got a slight majority in the House, and instead the Democrats have the majority.

Alcindor was asking for Trump's reaction to the sentiment that his pre-election anti-immigration comments emboldened racists and white nationalists, when Trump interrupted, as he had done several times throughout the contentious back-and-forth with members of the media.

Democrats won back control of the House.

In response, CNN said Trump's attacks on the press have gone too far.

"Mr. President, I have one other question on the Russian Federation investigation".

Acosta continued to argue over with the president over whether his campaign ad had been fair, pointing to images of people climbing over a wall.

"We saw the candidates I supported achieve tremendous success last night", Mr. Trump boasted.

"It was quite a chaotic and extraordinary news conference and when you cut away all the other stuff, there was a clear message coming from the president".

'I mean, I know you have it written down and you're going to tell me - let me tell you, it's a racist question'.

"Just sit down!" Trump shouted at Acosta. "You are a rude, bad person who should not be working for CNN", he added: "When you report fake news, which CNN does a lot, you are the enemy of the people".

He turned specifically on reporter Yamiche Alcindor of PBS' "NewsHour".

Trump stopped him again "Because I consider it an invasion".
