Almost 6,000 flights canceled or delayed as unsafe storm pushes East

In the Midwest, blizzard-like conditions swept down from the Great Lakes, blanketing Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin and Nebraska.

"Snow will continue to taper off to flurries and then end this morning", the service's Chicago office said in a statement, warning drivers to take extra caution on slippery roads in low visibility.

Disruptions were still ongoing on Monday morning, with almost 500 flights canceled and 200 delayed.

Road conditions in the Kansas City area became treacherous Sunday with snow and ice from a major winter storm that descended on the region. "Kansas City received 5.8" of snow Sunday, breaking the record for the date that was set in 1895, according to the National Weather Service. Stay in your vehicle if you do become stuck.

Kansas City was forced to close its airport for four hours and in Chicago, more than 800 flights were cancelled Sunday.

More than 240 incoming and outgoing flights have already been cancelled at Chicago O'Hare Airport on Monday November 26, with hundreds more having been cancelled the previous day, reports Flight Aware. Several state and US highways were impassable in Nebraska, but traffic was moving on Interstate 29 in the southwestern corner of Iowa and Interstate 80 in the eastern of the state, despite a blanket of snow.

The fast-moving storm system is now tracking to the East expected to hit upstate NY and northern New England on Monday.

"Expect the weather to roll in sometime this afternoon/early evening". He said rain will give way to heavy snowfall and "near whiteout conditions" that will make for unsafe travel.
