Heavyweight world titleholder Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury fought to a split-decision draw Saturday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

A 113-113 draw on Phil Edwards' card confirmed Wilder would remain as champion, disappointing both Fury and the raucous travelling fans who greeted the result with a chorus of boos.

But Fury, in part with motivation from Wilder, eventually got his life under control and returned to the ring in June after a 31-month layoff and won two fights in a row before agreeing to face Wilder.

Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs) is coming off a victory this past March over Luis Ortiz in which he had his loyal fanbase a bit anxious. I went to Germany to fight Klitshcko, I went to America to fight Deontay Wilder.

Entering the third saw slight boos from the crowd due to lack of engagement between the pair as Fury insisted on keeping coy and Wilder marched forward looking for an opening, tagging the former champ as the bell sounded 10 seconds to go in the round.

In just the first 21 games with the Lakers , James has already made plenty of history and will continue to do so. After missing a three-pointer to open the quarter, he grabbed a rebound and assisted on a Brandon Ingram dunk.

Clearly seeing the fight as just another hurdle to negotiate in his bid to face Anthony Joshua to become undisputed champion, Wilder added: "It's definitely the most important [fight of his career], but not the most hard".

The American champion struggled to connect cleanly with Fury throughout an absorbing contest, all too often sending huge arcing haymakers whistling past Fury's head. Bless deontay wilder he's a top fighting man. I showed good heart to get back.

Fury was calm after the decision was confirmed, but insisted in his post-fight interview he felt being the away fighter worked against him.

"I would love for it to be my next fight", Wilder said.

Wilder, the more aggressive of the two fighters early on, quickly moved into an early lead.
