The casket will be accompanied to Joint Base Andrews, outside Washington, by the 43rd president, Bush's son George W Bush; his wife, Laura; his brother Neil Bush and his family. Trump and the first lady, Melania Trump, are scheduled to attend.

Millie was famously referenced during the 1992 presidential campaign, when Bush said, of Bill Clinton and Al Gore, "My dog Millie knows more about foreign affairs than these two bozos".

The funeral at the Washington National Cathedral, set to be attended by a wide array of former presidents and politicians, including Donald Trump, will last 90 minutes.

Bush's death has also led to a series of symbolic moments. Wednesday has been designated by President Trump as a national day of mourning, and most federal agencies will be closed with federal workers given the day off. The United States Postal Service will suspend regular mail deliveries, retail services and administrative office activity.

Bush died at 94 on Friday.

Not all USA presidents have been fond of dogs though: John F Kennedy was allergic to dogs, and Donald Trump does not have one . The first national day of mourning was believed to be held in 1791 with the death of Benjamin Franklin, a founding father.

There will be a departure ceremony for Bush at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and his casket will arrive at the Washington National Cathedral five miles away at 11 a.m.

Shortly before leaving the service, he married his 19-year-old sweetheart, Barbara Pierce, and forged a 73-year union that was the longest presidential marriage in US history until her death. The motorcade then headed to Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base about 45 minutes away, where the 41st president will be given military honors before departing for Washington, D.C., on "Special Air Mission 41" - the name given the plane normally designated as Air Force One.

The Capitol will be open for dignitaries and the public to pay their respects through early Wednesday, with visitors allowed to walk past Bush's casket. The elder Bush's body will be buried in a family plot at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station.

He said Bush's "quality of life had deteriorated a lot" in recent months, but that near the end he was able to talk by phone with his adult children, including former President George W. Bush.

During this service Bush's grandson George P. Bush will speak as will Bush's best friend, James Baker, Bush's chief of staff and Secretary of State and Secretary of the Treasury.
