There has been much scuttlebutt around the UFC world that Phil “CM Punk” Brooks may never fight in the UFC. Well it appears that can be laid to rest, as the former WWE Champion is slated to fight officially at UFC 203. That event will take place on September 10 in Cleveland, OH, and Punk will fight Mickey Gall.
Punk made the announcement official last night on the UFC Unfiltered show. He told hosts Matt Serra and Jim Norton that he had been laying low in the media simply because he had nothing to say. “You can’t talk a bunch of shit until you’ve been in there, and I haven’t been. The instant I got cleared, I got on the horn and nailed everything down, and I’ll be debuting September 10 in Cleveland.”
Punk had been dealing with some injury issues and wanted to get those taken care of. Some of the injuries he had been dealing with have lingered for years. Punk added that he’s happy to have an established fight date. “You keep training and training until you hit a wall, and that’s the point I was at. I found out I’ve been walking around with a herniated disk for probably years,” he noted.
Bill Says: Well, obviously there’s time between now and September 10 but this should quiet down some of Punk’s critics that say he will never fight. I will continue to stand by my opinion that the guy deserves credit for stepping into this situation and at least attempting it, even if he gets his ass kicked.
