A couple of weeks ago, Alberto Del Rio (a/k/a Jose Alberto Rodriguez) was suspended from WWE for a Wellness Policy violation. According to a report that has surfaced on Tuesday on Wrestling Observer, it appears that Del Rio will not be returning to the company at all once that suspension is over.
The report that is circulating is that Del Rio and WWE have come to terms on a release from his contract. Those terms would allow him to return to Mexico and work immediately, as well as be able to immediately work international dates. He would also be able to work in the United States again within a few weeks. Del Rio was advertised for upcoming house shows beyond when his suspension was over, but has since been removed from those listings.
The reason being cited behind Del Rio negotiating a release stemmed from creative issues. When he returned, Del Rio was treated as a big deal and scored a clean US Championship win over John Cena at the Hell in a Cell pay per view. After that moment though, Del Rio’s stock fell quickly with the Mex-America and League of Nations gimmicks that just never seemed to connect. Del Rio felt unsatisfied, and also claimed that he was given promises of a strong main event push that never came to fruition.
It’s worth emphasizing that neither Del Rio nor WWE has made any sort of official comment on this matter to date, though Observer feels a WWE statement will be coming soon. We’ll keep you posted.
