WWE Sets Location and Date for 2017 Royal Rumble

On Friday, WWE made the announcement that the 2017 Royal Rumble will return to the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX.  The event will take place January 29, 2017 and will officially mark the beginning of the road to Wrestlemania 33 in Orlando, FL.

Tickets for the event will go on sale to the general public on October 14.  The Royal Rumble was last held in San Antonio back in 1997 at the same venue.  At that event, Shawn Michaels won the WWE Championship and Stone Cold Steve Austin won the first of his three Royal Rumble events.

Worth noting as well that this year, the Royal Rumble will not be competing with the National Football League championship games prior to the Super Bowl, as the event will take place on the week between the Conference Championships and the Super Bowl.  The full press release from WWE is shown below:

WWE® announced today that the Alamodome in San Antonio will host the 2017 WWE Royal Rumble on Sunday, January 29, 2017.  This marks the return of Royal Rumble to the Alamodome for the first time since 1997.

Royal Rumble is one of the WWE’s biggest events of the year and officially kicks off the road to WrestleMania.  The event will be highlighted by a 30-man over-the-top-rope Royal Rumble match featuring WWE Superstars from both Raw® and SmackDown®, where the winner will receive a title opportunity at WrestleMania®33 in Orlando on April 2, 2017.

Tickets for the 2017 WWE Royal Rumble will go on sale Friday, October 14 at 10 AM Central through all Ticketmaster outlets,, or by calling 1-800-745-3000.  All tickets are subject to service charges and facility fees.

The Alamodome previously hosted the 1997 Royal Rumble, where more than 60,000 fans witnessed WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin® win the Royal Rumble match and WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels® win the WWE Championship.
