The fallout for Joey Styles continues as two more promotions have cut ties with the former WWE and ECW announcer.
Beyond Wrestling took to their Twitter account to announce that they will no longer be working with Styles (tweet shown below) as a result of the commentary that Styles provided at EVOLVE 72, which included a reference to crude remarks by President-Elect Donald Trump in 2005. Gabe Sapolsky had noted on Twitter that he had given everyone a specific mandate to avoid political commentary of any kind during the show, which Styles had gone against with the reference.
CHIKARA Pro’s Mike Quackenbush also took to the internet, posting a lengthy blog post about the situation. He noted that the company is “terminating our relationship with Joey Styles,” effective today. He continued on to note that the company is instituting a zero tolerance policy for misogynistic, racist, and/or homophobic speech in any form, calling it “the shape of CHIKARA.”
As was noted earlier today on the site, Styles has issued a public apology and continues to be so for the incident.
Bill Says: I think Styles definitely did exercise poor judgment by bringing that comment up, especially after having been told to stay away from political references. I can’t blame promotions that are working with the FloSlam platform in shying away from working with Styles given the current climate. Should his career be completely shot out from under him for it? Not really, especially given that he realizes what he did was in poor form and has apologized. I will admit that promotions will have caution about bringing him on, as they should. We’ll see where he pops up next.
