WWE.com has confirmed that The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2017.
Throughout the 80s, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) personified tag team action. With flashy ring gear and teen idol good looks, Morton and Gibson traveled the territories. They created a following in Memphis, Tennessee, but it was their feud with their greatest rivals, The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton & Dennis Condrey, w/ Jim Cornette) that sky-rocketed them to the top, earning Morton and Gibson three runs with the Mid-South Tag Team Championships.
After Mid-South, Morton and Gibson would move on to Jim Crockett Promotions, and quickly captured the NWA World Tag Team Championships. They became a household name as Crockett’s shows aired across the United States as cable TV expanded. Their feud with The Midnight Express would continue into the NWA, but they would also go on to feud with The Four Horsemen as well. And while in NWA, Morton and Gibson would win the Tag Titles four times.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express haven’t spent much of their career in WWE, having made appearances in 1993 and later in 1998. Their work in the territories through the 80s and early 90s speaks volumes and provides a blueprint for what tag team wrestling can be.
Congratulations to Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson for being nominated for the WWE Hall of Fame – it is an honor that is long overdue for this classic team.
