In a press release, Bellator has announced that Matt Mitrione is dealing with kidney stones, and will be unable to compete at Bellator 172. The card takes place tonight at the SAP Center in San Jose, California tonight. No date for the fight has been determined.
As the broadcast kicked off tonight, Bellator’s Sean Grande said that Mitrione had advised Bellator officials that he was dealing with kidney stones “a couple days ago.” Mitrione at first did not think it would be a concern, but it “became a significantly bigger issue last night.” Mitrione wanted to go through with the fight, but the decision was made at around 3 PM this afternoon the fight.
Grande noted that Fedor was offered other opponents, but he declined and opted to wait for Mitrione to recover and fight him.
Bill Says: A tough blow to Spike’s broadcast, because this was one of the biggest fights they’ve ever promoted. The card overall is strong and moving Josh Thomson vs. Patricky Friere to the main event is still a solid fight for the show. We’ll post the quick rundown of results of the show either later this evening or tomorrow.
