In a report on ESPN.com earlier this afternoon, it was reported that the interim lightweight championship bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov (24-0) and Tony Ferguson (22-3) on the UFC 209 card has been canceled due to medical issues. The bout was the co-main event of the UFC 209 card, which will take place on March 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
Nurmagomedov was taken to a local hospital in Las Vegas for medical complications due to cutting weight for the fight. A doctor recommended that the fight be canceled. UFC released a statement on the matter that read as follows:
“UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov was transported to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center Thursday evening due to weight management medical issues,” a UFC statement read. “He was treated and has been discharged.”
This is the third time that a bout between the two men has been canceled. Both in 2015 and 2016, the pair were scheduled to face each other, but both times injuries took the bout away.
Ferguson had made weight for the fight during Friday’s weigh ins, and at that time the bout was still on.
