In a report that came out on ProFootballTalk.com, Mike Florio noted that New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski had team approval to participate in the Wrestlemania angle on Sunday. Gronkowski was taunted by Jinder Mahal at ringside during the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royale after beating up Gronkowski’s friend, Mojo Rawley, who went on to win the match. Gronkowski got in the ring after the taunting and delivered a shoulder block to Mahal.
Under NFL rules, team management does reserve the right to block a player from participating in activities that “may cause risk of serious injury.” According to the report, Gronkowski did check in with team management in advance and they did not oppose his participation. The team has declined further comment on the matter.
Bill Says: When Gronk climbed over the barrier, a security guard jumped right in front of him but immediately several WWE referees appeared and talked to her, so it seemed to me like they were setting up something. I didn’t expect Gronk to get physical, knowing the referenced rule above. One thing about it, this got WWE and Wrestlemania some crossover publicity from sports media, given Gronkowski’s popularity.
